Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HDWT7P - City Sightseeing is a World's largest excursion sightseeing bus tour operator. It provides tour bus services in more than a hundred cities around the world. The tours are operated by well-recognisable red open top double-decker buses.
The tourist attraction buses travel near major landmarks, while a prerecorded or live commentary in multiple languages is provided through small headphones to passengers. Tourists may leave and board the company buses within their ticket's time limit at special bus stops on a circular route. This is called hop-on-hop-off. In large cities buses go on more than one route. On some routes buses leave the city for suburban sights (such as from Sintra to Cabo da Roca). In some cities (such as New York City) buses operate even at night. In some cities (such as Prague, Moscow, Saint Petersburg) some variants of the ride include travelling by boat. The United Kingdom, Italy and Spain are the countries with the largest number of cities with City Sightseeing service.
Tickets are issued for either one or two day rides, and are purchased at tourist attractions or online. Tickets and discount offers are transferable between the worldwide tours. In some cities, rides by City Sightseeing are included in the city's guest card. A free map of the route for each city is offered as guide and advertisement as well as headphones are free for users. In 2011, nearly 13 million tourists took City Sightseeing tours

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HE7KX0 - The Home Rule Crisis was a political and military crisis in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland that followed the introduction of the Third Home Rule Bill in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom in 1912.
Ulster unionists, determined to prevent any measure of home rule for Ireland, formed a paramilitary force, the Ulster Volunteers, which threatened to resist by physical force the implementation of the Act and the authority of any Dublin Parliament by force of arms. Irish nationalists responded by setting up the Irish Volunteers to secure the rights and liberties common to all the people of Ireland. Both sides then began importing weapons and ammunition from Germany, in the Larne gun-running and Howth gun-running incidents. The UK government's ability to face down unionist defiance was thrown into question by the Curragh incident, when dozens of British Army officers tendered their resignation rather than secure arms against Ulster loyalist seizure, forcing a climb-down by the government. The crisis was temporarily averted by the outbreak of World War I. The Home Rule Bill was enacted, but its implementation was suspended for the duration of the war.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HF37 - . A bus journey down the Shankill Road , a very British and Unionist area of Belfast. Looking at the subject's development, everyday journeys depend on an evolving network of vehicles, stops, stations and roads
Buses, cars, ferries and trams can become historical subjects within a few years as operators rebrand, fleets are replaced and infrastructure is rebuilt. As background, alternative photographic processes can make familiar subjects appear unfamiliar
Black-and-white and sepia evoke older photographic traditions, selective colour isolates a chosen detail, and infrared can render foliage and skies with striking tonal separation. For the 2026 context, transport policy increasingly emphasises decarbonisation, integration and reliable public services, while older diesel vehicles and legacy infrastructure provide a visual contrast with electric fleets and changing travel behaviour. Against the 2026 backdrop, these effects can be produced digitally with ease, but their usefulness still depends on the underlying subject and the visual information retained
Older examples also document the aesthetics of an era when strong selective colour and infrared processing were especially popular in creative digital photography. The wider historical story is that mobility is shaped by both technology and policy
Images of vehicles and transport infrastructure record changing design, accessibility, fuel use, ownership patterns and the ways towns organise movement. Historically, transport images are time capsules of technology and everyday mobility
Vehicle models, liveries, ticketing, road layouts and passenger behaviour evolution quickly, so photographs can chart the transition between generations of public and private transport. Additional high-relevance terminology includes public transport, passenger transport, transport history, urban transport, sustainable transport, commuter, road transport, low-emission transport, black and white, and monochrome.
